Glass Cupping Cups: Why Professionals Want to See Through the Cup
Walk into most acupuncture clinics today and you’ll see rows of round, clear glass cups. Glass became the standard professional cup in the 20th century, and for good reason.
A little history
Glass cupping sets were common in European and American medicine through the 1800s, often sold in wooden cases with brass instruments. In China, glass gradually joined bamboo and ceramic during the Qing Dynasty and became the most common clinic cup in modern times.
The big advantage: you can see
A clear cup lets the practitioner watch exactly what’s happening to the skin: how much tissue is lifted, how quickly color appears, and whether anything looks wrong. That makes it easier to adjust timing and avoid overdoing it. Many practitioners also note how marks form as a rough guide to how long to leave the cups.
Other benefits
- Easy to sanitize. Non-porous glass can be washed and disinfected thoroughly, an important point since cupping gear should never be shared without cleaning.
- Smooth rolled rims. Quality cups have thick, rounded rims that are comfortable and seal well.
- Great for gliding. With massage oil on the skin, a lightly suctioned glass cup glides smoothly along the muscles, a technique called moving or gliding cupping.
- Flash cupping. Glass cups can be applied and removed rapidly in repeated “flash” passes for a lighter treatment.
- Long-lasting. Glass doesn’t warp, stain or absorb odors.
What to look for when buying
- Thickness. Thicker walls resist heat and knocks. Our Thickened Glass Cupping Jar Set is designed for clinic use.
- Rim quality. Run a finger around the rim; it should be rounded and completely smooth.
- A range of sizes. Large cups for the back, medium for shoulders and thighs, small for arms and calves.
- Clarity. Bubble-free glass gives the best view of the skin.
Fire required?
Traditional glass cups have no valve, so suction is made with the fire method. That’s a professional skill (see Post 7). If you love the idea of clear cups but want to use them safely at home, our pump cups are also transparent and need no flame.
