Your First At-Home Cupping Session: A Step-by-Step Guide
You’ve got your pump cupping set. Now what? This guide walks you through a gentle first session. Start light; you can always do more next time.
Before you begin
Check that cupping is right for you. Skip it, or ask your doctor first, if you are pregnant, take blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder, diabetes with poor circulation, a heart condition or a pacemaker, or skin that is broken, sunburned, infected or affected by eczema or psoriasis. Never cup over varicose veins, moles, bony areas, the front of the neck or the face with body cups. See Post 12 for the full list.
What you’ll need
- A clean pump cupping set
- Massage oil or lotion (optional, for gliding)
- A towel and a timer
- A helper for your back
Step by step
- Clean the cups and the skin. Wash your hands, wipe the cups with alcohol and let them dry. Make sure the skin is clean and dry.
- Pick a fleshy area. Start with large muscles: upper back beside the spine (not on it), shoulders, or thighs.
- Place the cup and pump gently. Press the cup flat on the skin, attach the pump and give one or two squeezes. You should feel a firm pull, never sharp pain. If it hurts, lift the valve slightly to let air in.
- Start short. Leave cups on for 3–5 minutes the first time. Experienced users often go 5–10 minutes; there’s no benefit to pushing longer.
- Watch the skin. Pinkness or red-purple color is normal. Remove the cup right away if you see blisters, feel burning, numbness or tingling, or feel dizzy.
- Release properly. Pull up the valve to let air in, then lift the cup. Never yank a cup off while it’s still suctioned.
- Try gliding (optional). Apply oil, use light suction (one pump) and slowly slide the cup along the muscle.
Aftercare
- Drink water and keep the area warm and covered for a few hours.
- Avoid hot tubs, saunas and intense workouts for the rest of the day.
- Expect round marks. They’re usually painless and fade over several days to a week.
- Wait until marks have faded before cupping the same spot again.
How often?
For general relaxation, once or twice a week is plenty to start. Listen to your body, and if you’re using cupping for a specific pain problem, involve a healthcare provider so nothing important gets missed.
